Rising tariffs have sparked fresh concerns about the economy, leaving many wondering how mortgage rates might respond in the coming months.
While the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate recently dipped to 6.6%, down from 6.82% a year ago, experts say the future is unclear. President Trump’s sweeping new tariffs on imports have injected volatility into financial markets, prompting some to speculate that borrowing costs could drop further.
At the same time, construction costs may rise as roughly 7% of materials used in U.S. homebuilding come from abroad — many from China — now facing tariffs as high as 34%.
Still, industry analysts warn that uncertainty surrounding economic policy and housing affordability may continue to challenge buyers this season
